Frequently asked questions

General

When can you prepare my return?

Returns are prepared for the 2027 filing season, which begins once the IRS opens electronic filing in early 2027. We are not preparing or filing returns before then.

Consultations are open now, and there is a good reason to have one early. A short call lets us go over your situation, tell you which package fits and what it would cost, and flag anything worth gathering or doing before the year ends — which is while most tax decisions are still changeable.

The call is also how we both decide whether to work together. There is no commitment on either side, and nothing is booked on the call itself.

Are you a Certified Public Accountant (CPA)?

No. We are not CPAs, Enrolled Agents, or tax attorneys, and we won't imply otherwise. Jose is an independent tax preparer registered with the IRS, trained through Intuit Academy, with hands-on experience preparing individual returns in Drake professional software.

What happens if I get audited?

Every return we file includes audit defense through Protection Plus at no extra cost. If the IRS or New York State sends a letter or opens an audit about a return we prepared, their team of enrolled agents and CPAs responds and deals with the tax authority on your behalf.

We are not CPAs or Enrolled Agents ourselves, so we can't personally represent you before the IRS. That is exactly why audit defense is included. We will also help you understand any notice, pull the records behind the figures we filed, and stand behind our work.

Why choose you over a large tax chain?

You deal with the same person from start to finish, at a price published on our pricing page rather than calculated at the counter. We don't treat your return as a one-size-fits-all transaction. We take the time to understand your income, deductions, credits and circumstances, and we explain the result in plain language.

Do I need to provide documentation?

Yes. You're responsible for giving us complete and accurate information, with supporting documents where applicable. We may ask for more detail if something needs clarifying before your return is filed. We'd rather ask than guess.

How do I send my documents safely?

Through an encrypted client portal, never by email attachment. Tax documents carry your Social Security number and full income history, and unprotected email is the most common way that information gets exposed. You'll get a private upload link after your quote.

Which states can you file for?

Federal returns anywhere, and New York state returns. Some people also need to file in another state, for example after moving during the year or working in New Jersey. If that's you, mention it when you get in touch and we'll tell you up front whether we can help.

Rental property & real estate

Do you handle rental properties?

Yes. Alongside W-2 and self-employed returns, we work with individual landlords and investors to organize and report rental income and expenses, and to review applicable deductions and depreciation.

I only own one rental. Can you still help?

Yes. Rental Property Starter is built precisely for one or two properties. You are not too small to bother with, and a single rental is where a missed depreciation deduction costs the most relative to your fee.

I own several properties. Can you handle that?

Yes. The Real Estate Investor package is designed for multiple rental properties. Investor returns vary a lot in complexity, so the final price is confirmed in writing before preparation begins, never after.

What do you need from me for a rental property?

Rental income records, expense totals by category, and mortgage interest and property tax statements. For a property's first year with us, we also need the closing statement and the date it was placed in service, so depreciation is set up correctly from the start.
